- Pitched for the Jacksonville State University Gamecocks from ’85-‘87
Currently Joe is the varsity pitching coach at De La Salle Collegiate in Warren. In 2000 the De La Salle Pilots won their second Division 1 state championship. Many of the players Joe has coached or instructed have gone on to play college or professional ball such as Alex Avila (University of Alabama; drafted by Detroit Tigers in the 5th Round of the 2008 Draft) and Nicolas Buss (University of Southern California; drafted by Los Angeles Dodgers in the 8th Round of the 2008 Draft).
As a player Joe was a pitcher on the 1981 Class A State Championship team at Bishop Gallagher and also led them to two Detroit Catholic League titles in ’80 and ’82. In college at Jacksonville State University Joe recorded a team-best 1.89 ERA, going 6-0 with 52 strikeouts and only 10 earned runs in his 1986 season. At JSU Joe pitched on the same staff as current Detroit Tiger’s closer Todd Jones.
